City extends comment period for proposed mobile business trading areas across metro

The City is extending the public comment period on 142 proposed mobile business trading areas in Cape Town. The comment period will now close on 2 November 2024. The designation of specified trading areas is a key step in the process of allowing permits to be issued to mobile businesses, such as food trucks.
The extension of the comment period will give the public more time to submit their feedback.
The provision of trading areas will give effect to the draft Mobile Business Policy that is coupled with proposed amendments to the related Informal Trading By-law.
During the current public participation process, interested stakeholders can view the 142 proposed sites on the Have Your Say page on the City's website. This includes proposals for the number of bays available per site, the locations, and the general terms and conditions when operating.
'Mobile businesses like food trucks, barber shops and clothing shops have become increasingly popular. As such, the City wants to make it easier for businesses to operate in this sector. For this reason, the City set off on a journey to draft its first Mobile Business Policy. The policy was advertised and was open for public comment,' said Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.
Now that a policy has been drafted, the next steps include a by-law to activate mobile business permitting. Proposed mobile business trading areas are also needed for the mobile businesses to operate.
You have until 2 November 2024 to submit your comments. The City will also host an open day on 31 October 2024 to engage residents about the proposed mobile business trading areas. The open day will be held at the Subcouncil 16 office, on the 11th floor, at 44 Wale Street, Cape Town CBD.

Way forward
- The proposed mobile business trading areas are out for comment (as mentioned above).
- Once this process is completed, it will be tabled with the draft Mobile Business Policy and related Informal Trading By-law proposed amendments at the Portfolio Committee, Mayoral Committee meeting, and Council for consideration and approval.
